Today, the beautifully restored corporate function rooms at Whalley Abbey in the Diocese of Blackburn stand testament to the superb reputation being acquired by Naylor & Walkden for renovations ecclesiastical in genre.

A busy training and conference facility dating back to the 14th century, the Whalley Abbey restoration was undertaken by Naylor & Walkden whilst the building was still being used daily.

With a history that can be traced back to 1296 the abbey remains a spiritual power house for the Diocese of Blackburn and a place for all kinds of industrial, educational and cultural activities. The church was built from 1330 to 1380 but the Abbot’s lodging and infirmary was not completed until c.1440.

At the dissolution of the monastery in 1537, the property passed into private hands and it remained a private residence until 1923, when the Church of England acquired possession.

Since then much work, such as that contracted to Naylor & Walkden, has been commissioned to equip the venue as a state of the art conference centre.

The recent £1.2m renovation project meant that a team of over 30 specialist builders and contractors had to work with architects and archaeologists to restore the facility back to its original splendour.

The joinery shop at Naylor & Walkden had to re-create original gothic style balustrades and carved oak arches and the stone masons had to work on re-creating the original stone arches.
